Forest The collectively known Barmah-Millewa Forest covers some 70,000 hectares and is the largest Redgum forest in the Southern Hemisphere. Frequent flooding has created a vast mosaic of swamps and lagoons known as the Millewa Wetlands. The area is home to hundreds of birds, animals, plants and trees.
Fishing
The Murray and Edward Rivers and Gulpa Creek are all within 10km of Mathoura and are prized fishing grounds by anglers throughout Australia. Information guides are available from the Visitor Centreand licenses and bait are available from local agents.
Bird Observatory
The recently constructed Gulpa Creek Reed Beds Bird Observatory is located approximately 4km from town. This world class observation facility provides accessible viewing of exceptional birdlife and the magnificent Gulpa Creek Reed Beds. For many years bird enthusiasts have been returning to the area to explore the unique birdlife of the forest. more>
Forest Walks
Discover the wildlife of the creekside during easy walks of up to 5km along the tranquil Gulpa Creek. Canoe trees and Aboriginal oven moulds testify to the ancient occupation of these forests. Forest Drives
Ride a bike or drive along any of the forest tracks to experience the beauty of the area. Forest Drive maps are available from the Visitor Centre. There are many picnic sites within the forest with facilities such as tables and BBQs. Download Forest Drives brochure(173Kb pdf)
Camping
Camping is permitted throughout the Forest and NSW State Forests provide many free of charge established camping areas. Most include water, fire places and space for a number of tents or caravans. These sites cannot be reserved in advance.
Water Fun
The Murray River in Mathoura is unique with no high banks. Find a secluded beach, have a swim, and enjoy a picnic with wines of the southern Riverina. A boat ramp at Picnic Point, close to caravan parks, is popular with water skiers and canoeists.
Canoe/Kayak
Canoe or Kayak on peaceful lakes and streams but take note of the much stronger current in the Murray, especially in The Narrows.
Wine Tasting
Visit the Mathoura Visitor Centre where you can taste a selection of wines produced in the Murray Shire. For further information see food & wine.
Cadell Fault
The Cadell Fault is a ridge running from Echuca to Deniliquin (through Mathoura). It was formed when the land was thrust upwards, some 15 metres east of the fault, by earthquakes about 30 thousand years ago. For more information see history.

Murray Valley Trail
The Murray Valley Trail is a way to discover and experience the Murray Valley and Australias greatest rives system from the mountains to the sea. Mathoura forms part of the the Barmah-Millewa section of the trail, where the Murray River flows through the largest Redgum forest in Australia. Mathoura has tennis courts and two golf courses, bookings are essential, for further information contact the Visitor Centre.
Swimming Pool
Located in Mathoura Street, the swimming pool is open to the public throughout the summer months.
Kingfisher Cruises
MV Kingfisher, moored near the Barmah township, conducts visitor cruises through the wetlands whenever water levels allow, with an excellent commentary by your skipper. Link to Kingfisher Cruises website
The Dharnya Centre
The Dharnya Centre, located near Barmah interprets the history and culture of the Yorta Yorta people. Take a tour with an indigenous cultural officer or follow a self-guided brochure.
